These are technically spoonerisms (reversing the initial sounds of words), but still extraordinarily amusing. Credit to Spider Robinson, who used this as the opening of a speech about Robert A Heinlein at a sci-fi con some years back...

Good evening, Genties and Ladlemen of the Audio Radiance, and good odding, too, for that matter...

When a picture is worth a million laughs...
Tonight at my Toastmasters meeting, one of the speakers told us about her new digital camera. It apparently has a "Gigglebyte" of memory. :)

(She later told me she said that on purpose, as it was a humorous speech, but I like the word...)

I think we need a few definitions.
Or should that be "daffynitions"? Spell checkers won't help me now... :-p

Malaprop - (noun) an example of a malapropism.

Malaproprism - (From Webster's) (noun) 1) A usually humorous misapplication of a word, specifically the use of a word sounding somewhat like the one intended but ludicrously wrong in the context 2) malaprop

Malapro - (noun) someone who gets paid to use words incorrectly in a professional capacity

Malapropiotic - (adj) related to or having the characteristics of malapropism. (syn.: malapropian)

Malapropriate - (verb) the act of taking a word with the intention of using it incorrectly. (I'm torn on the spelling. I think "malappropriate" would work just as well, but that would seem more like "inappropriate, in a bad way".)

Malapropitis - (noun) the irritation resulting from excessive exposure to malapropisms. (Usually responds well to antibiotic therapy.)

Malaprocreation - when the misuse of a particular word becomes common, creating a word usage that is eventually deemed acceptable

Blame wench18...
After her entry yesterday about word misuse and two terms getting mangled today, I decided the pain and amusement that malapropisms provide should have a place to be shared.

And so I created this community.

The two for today?

a) Going on a plant walk today with a naturalist, and having it occur to me that the words "naturalist" (field biologist) and "naturist" (nudist) should not be used interchangeably. (Did I mention you should blame wench18? If you know her, that will make sense.)

b) Having a friend use "Viola!" instead of "Voilá!" I explained to him that a viola is a musical instrument.
